Al Hirschfeld frequented The Algonquin throughout his entire life. Many of the Round Table members were friends and patrons who helped launch Hirschfeld’s nearly century-long career. Alexander Woollcott published his caricatures in The World newspaper in April 1925. George Kaufman was the editor of the Drama section at the New York Times when it published Hirschfeld’s first theater caricature in January 1928. Heywood Broun wrote the foreword to Hirschfeld’s first book in 1933. His famous 1962 drawing of the Round Table is so iconic that it illustrates the Encyclopedia Britannica’s entry on the group. In 1991, the Algonquin name a suite in his honor. Now the lobby has a number of Hirschfeld prints and images throughout, so you can look for NINAs as you have a drink at the Blue Bar.
